In my work as a therapist, I use the following modalities to help assist clients in exploring themselves and their change process:
IFS is a type of therapy that believes we are all made up of many different parts. The IFS model seeks to integrate our many different parts into a place of equilibrium. This is done though the process of identifying our protectors, managers, and exiles to learn more about our true Self and become more Self lead.
CBT is a form of treatment that focuses on identifying negative or maladaptive ways of thinking and behaving and changing these thoughts behaviors through cognitive reframing, challenging, and refocusing. CBT has been proven effective in treating anxiety and mood disorders as well as addiction and eating disorders.
MI is a form of therapy that is focused on enhancing a client motivation for change. “MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.” (Miller & Rollnick, 2013, p. 29)
SFBT is a type of therapy that is future-focused, goal-directed, and focuses on solutions, rather than on the problems that brought clients to seek therapy.
I use the enneagram often in session not as much as a treatment modality, but for developing a language and promoting insight with clients. The Enneagram is a system of typology that classifies human personality into nine basic types. The Enneagram differs from other personality assessment tools as the enneagram has a focus on our motivations behind our behavior rather than pointing out more superficial personality characteristics. Clients have found the enneagram to be helpful in their own self-awareness as well as developing a deeper understanding of those around them.
DBT was originally developed for the purpose of treating Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) but was soon found to be an effective treatment modality across many disorders. DBT focuses on the four main principles of mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal resolutions, and believes that behavior change can occur through the development of these skills.
ERP is a treatment modality designed for treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). ERP refers to confronting and exposing yourself to stressful stimuli and refraining from engaging in the behavior that is compulsive or obsessive. Through this practice, the client is able to learn how to sit through the uncomfortable emotions that are elicited and will “retrain your brain” to no longer see the object of the obsession as a threat.
